Happiest of Holidays at Sunflower Preschool!

We love the holiday season at Sunflower Preschool. The children and teachers have enjoyed our Halloween and Thanksgiving celebrations and we look forward to more celebrations in December as well.

Halloween: Our 32nd annual Halloween Party was so much fun! Thanks to all our parent volunteers and hard-working teachers, the party went off without a hitch. Halloween day was bright and blustery and all our little Halloween characters enjoyed games and activities inside and outside, and yummy snacks. Our music teacher sang spooky and silly songs that were entertaining for the whole family.

Thanksgiving: We celebrated our Thanksgiving feast on Friday November 21st. The kids helped cook our delicious meal of mashed potatoes, cranberries and turkey. We baked homemade corn muffins and pumpkin pie from the big pumpkin we got at Munson Farms. They also enjoyed a real fire outside and hot cocoa. We believe that children should know where their food comes from and Thanksgiving provides us with a great hands-on opportunity to teach the children about harvesting, cooking, and the first Thanksgiving.

We also had a special Thanksgiving yoga class that focused on gratitude. When the children were asked what they were thankful for, we received so many wonderful responses including: “my friends”, “mom”, “dad”, “the snow”, “the mountains”, “my cat”, “my dog”, and our favorite: “my school!”

December Holidays: We will enjoy our Holiday party on Friday December 19th! (Look for more information in the December newsletter.) Leading up to party the kids will learn how people celebrate the turn of seasons in various ways all over the world. Some examples include learning about winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, making latkes and spinning dreidals, and creating sparkly holiday art.

We will also be using nature in our art throughout December: pine cones and needles, colored ice sculptures, and painting snow. And in the science room we will be learning about trees, buffalo, prairie dogs, animal tracks and some special projects on the lab bench.

From our Sunflower family to yours, we wish you Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!
